Editorial Reviews

Book Description
HERE ARE OVER SEVENTY GAMES TO HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN TO READ–AND LOVE IT.

Peggy Kaye’s Games for Reading helps children read by doing just what kids like best: playing games.  There is a “bingo” game that helps children learn vocabulary. There is a rhyming game that helps them hear letter sounds more accurately. There are mazes and puzzles, games that train the eye to see patterns of letters, games that train the ear so a child can sound out words, games that awaken a child’s imagination and creativity, and games that provide the right spark to fire a child’s enthusiasm for reading. There are games in which your child has to act silly and games–sure to be any child’s favorite–in which you do.

Easy to follow and easy to play, these games are ideal for busy, working parents. You can read a game in a few minutes and start to play right away. You can play on car trips, while doing the laundry, or while cooking. These games are so much fun for the whole family that you may forget their serious purpose.  But they will help all beginning readers–those who have reading problems and those who do not–learn to read and want to read.

Games for Reading also includes a list of easy-to-read books and books for reading aloud, and a “Note to Teachers” on how to play these games in their classrooms.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow

I went to Borders The Curve after 12pm on release day, no mob, no crowd. I am glad I could walk in comfortably to get a copy. Hypermarts have no rights to sell books on its launch date by slashing the price to attract other sales. Price control in any business is very important. Retail price fixed and published is to ensure everyone gets a fair deal. Does anyone care to know how businesses thrive to make their profit to keep its doors open? Giving away discounts simply to make sales figure is not a wise strategy, let alone if you try to do this to a product that is highly anticipated over the years (mind you, it’s the last book of HP), it is like killing the excitement, the fun and the party. Would you like this to happen to your own party? I confess I am not a great fan of Rowling’s HP but for the sake of telling my 2 toddler boys what happen to Potter in the end. I am not a fast reader, just into chapter two after 4 hours, I have work to do you know. By the way, next time if you want to buy a book, go to a bookstore. Not hypermarts. It’s unconventional economics. This is not the first time bigger businesses compete with each other and hurt small retailers in the process. Ah… by the way consumers who buy from price cut deals are not loyal customer and will not thank you in return.

Are there any writers in Kuching?

Filed under: Reading List, Shopping, Travel — agnes @ 3:41 pm

I am not smart to find out where to get local books. I love to hunt for local books. There are so much to read and understand about Kuching and Sarawak. People, culture, food, life style, environment, building, social behaviour and history.

Genres I am looking for:

Architecture
Craft: Beads, Weavework, Pottery
Fashion
Food history, story and recipes.

Book: Shanghai Sisters by Miranda Eu

Filed under: Reading List — tanling @ 2:42 am

shanghai_sisters_by_miranda_eu.png

I have not been taking pictures of cooking lately. Busy reading books I bought over the months. I bought Shanghai Sisters out of curiousity - author’s name Miranda Eu. I guessed she is from the famous Eu Yan Sang chinese medical hall family. Yep she is, married into the Eu family. Don’t misunderstand that this book is about Eu but about the Miranda’s family. Miranda’s maiden family name is Loo. Her grandparents are Hardoon (the Grandpa-a Jewish) and Loo (the Grandma-a half Chinese) are rich and famous before WWII in Shanghai. This books reveals what money can do good and also damage a family. Good read if you are a Shanghai city fan.

I am putting up a reading list to audit my books and magazines in possesion. I have been going to bookstores more often than wet markets. I hope it is a good way to keep track of my reading notes.
