Chocolate: See’s Candy

Filed under: Eating Out — agnes @ 3:21 pm

MalaysiaBest blogged on Theme Tuesday – Chocolate Desserts reminded me of See’s Candy which I had in Hong Kong. The luxurious and velvety melt on tongue experience is still fresh. I would reward myself again on a piece of See’s Candy after seeing success on my assignments.

Nanxiang at The Curve

Filed under: Eating Out — tanling @ 4:53 pm

 nanxiang.jpg

Nanxiang Mantou Dian is a famous 1900 Shanghai steam dumpling which business is still brisk till this day at the original shop. I tried Nanxiang outlet at Bugis Junction which I’m afraid is disappointing and long queue.

Nanxiang best selling steam dumpling should be enjoy slowly while it is still steaming hot. Avoid lip or tongue burn by sipping a little at a time – the dumpling’s contained hot soup, thru the opening of on top.

Nanxiang at The Curve is pricey RM77+ for 2 persons, not much filling-more like snack portion. I like the stir fry rice cake though some may find it a little salty. The serving is quite small.

It has been a while MIL’s buns sitting inside my fridge. So ‘sayang’ to gobble them up. MIL bun wrapping skills has improved. It used to be quite gross looking. I finally made up my mind to steam all and eat with my 3 boyfriends. Taste damn good with Aik Cheong’s ‘kopi O kosong’ on a quiet Sunday afternoon.

Assorted Potato Salad

Filed under: Kitchen — tanling @ 3:26 pm

potato_salad.png

For mental note, today I bought 2 medium purple potatoes, 1 large pink potato, 3 new potatoes and 1 local sweet potato. Cleaned and steamed all potatoes together till soft but not mushy. While they were still hot, peeled off the skin. Break all hot potatoes by hand into bite size. Put all onto a plate. Squeeze some japanese mayonaise and sprinkle generous amount of finely cut spring onion. Mix and enjoy.

Beads, Paper Crane and Needle

Filed under: Personal — tanling @ 5:39 pm

Rusty metal box
Used to store chocolates
Now filled up with colourful beads

White piece of paper
Folded neatly and precisely
That forms an elegant white crane

Leading the way
Followed by threads
To form a pair of mandarin ducks

These were Grandma gifts
Though she did not have much

Ying Ge Lou at The Curve

Filed under: Eating Out — tanling @ 5:39 pm

Food at Hakka restaurant – Ying Ge Lou set this establishment in its own direction, ethnic chinese food. Fluffy and hot brown rice. Omellete in chinese wine soup which almost knock me off. I am a lousy drinker. Good claypot dishes.

My next door neighbour-his wife is an excellent cook. Tonight she gave us 2 cute little – palm sized rice dumplings.. Hainanese style. I have never seen though I am a Hainanese. My husband and sons (including myself) were so in love with her rice dumpling… Let the pictures do the talking.

I want to give it a French name coz of its’ size. Hainanese little rice dumpling will be….

Book: Shanghai Sisters by Miranda Eu

Filed under: Reading List — tanling @ 2:42 am

shanghai_sisters_by_miranda_eu.png

I have not been taking pictures of cooking lately. Busy reading books I bought over the months. I bought Shanghai Sisters out of curiousity – author’s name Miranda Eu. I guessed she is from the famous Eu Yan Sang chinese medical hall family. Yep she is, married into the Eu family. Don’t misunderstand that this book is about Eu but about the Miranda’s family. Miranda’s maiden family name is Loo. Her grandparents are Hardoon (the Grandpa-a Jewish) and Loo (the Grandma-a half Chinese) are rich and famous before WWII in Shanghai. This books reveals what money can do good and also damage a family. Good read if you are a Shanghai city fan.

Steamed fish & fish meal

Filed under: Kitchen — tanling @ 8:35 am

I have gone mad recently, over fishes. Both of my sons enjoy any style of cooked fish. My younger son Chris went even madder over them – dead or alive.

Cod Cod cooked

I bought all the fishes I had on this post from Jusco. I could not resist my temptation, ended up buying 2 kinds of fishes for dinner. On cod fish, I decided not to use any sauce – not even soya sauce, I used wolfberry or gei chee (regretted not putting more) as it is good at drawing the freshness of cod fish. Each bite of cod fish with wolfberry tastes sweet and melt on your tongue sensation.

Another fish Another fish-cooked

This second fish dish (forgot the fish name), as you can see, I had slices of ginger on top to steam and later added crispy pickled radishes as topping after steaming. The taste turned out to be so-so.
